Finding Rosa: A Mother with Alzheimer’s/A Daughter in Search of the Past

A moving account of one woman's journey–geographical intellectual, and emotional–into the realm of her mother's dementia and in search of the past and home.
Today’s Best Nonfiction: Encounters from Reader's Digest
Biennual Bressani Prize for Nonfiction. 2010
Wilfred Eggleston Award for Nonfiction, 2009

When her mother, Rosa, begins to show signs of Alzheimer’s, Caterina Edwards embarks on a complex journey—all at once geographical, intellectual, and emotional—that turns out to be a journey in search of the past and of home.

As Rosa loses her memory and her sense of herself, Edwards travels to Istria, now part of Croatia, to get at the truth of her mother’s past. There she discovers the suppressed history of Istria—the ethnic cleansing of her mother’s people—and uncovers Rosa’s personal losses—her family’s exile, her father’s mysterious death, and the roots of her own sense of never belonging. Caught in that ever-growing “sandwich generation” of women caring for both their own children and ailing, aging parents, Edwards balances the demands of raising teenage daughters with the pressures of dealing with her deteriorating mother. During the four years that Edwards cares for her mother, she must also deal with her mother’s confusion, hostility, paranoia, and fear, as well as her own physical and emotional exhaustion. Through this journey, Edwards braves an area of darkness with and for her mother and finally comes to know who her mother was.

What People Say About

Finding Rosa: A Mother with Alzheimer’s/A Daughter in Search of the Past

I loved the balance of the book, the shift between discovery and the difficult loss Caterina faced as she was losing her mother to the unknown. I was not expecting to find the history of a lost people in this book as the title simply does not reflect what is in its pages, but was not disappointed. Inside these pages you will find a mesmerizing historical tale looked at from several vantage points, but primarily from that of Caterina, a master storyteller who can bring a family legacy and the history of a lost country back to life.

For a writer reading this book, I was constantly in awe of the marvelous way Edwards hangs the larger story of her mother’s life and the tragic history of the province of Istria on what might otherwise be only a struggle to care for an Alzheimer-stricken parent. For a writer, it is a wonderful example of how to thread a storyline so that the reader is drawn deeper and deeper into a fascinating mystery of a lost life.

Finding Rosa" by Caterina Edwards is not only a truly honest non-fiction memoir about a daughter's search for her Mother's past and how it relates to their ongoing relationship, but also, a Gold Mine of historical information dug up with unrelenting research and love. I have recommended this fabulous read to all of my friends and family and have read it 3 times, unable to set it down during any of the readings. I congratulate Caterina for her unique prose and ability to intertwine the personal story with the historical aspect. We would never have known so much of the history of Istria and the devastation which took place there if not for this most amazing author.

About me

When I was a child, I told myself stories to escape reality and plot adventures. As an adult, I use my words to explore, find, and connect to a deeper reality.

I have published six books, fiction and nonfiction, four of which won awards, and all received considerable critical and academic attention. I was also inducted into the City of Edmonton’s Cultural and Arts Hall of Fame.
I am happy to visit book clubs either in person or through Zoom.

I am also available to speak on a variety of literary topics, including the writing life or the difficulties in writing your family story.

And I can offer half or full day writing workshops. I have experience giving workshops in schools, to writing groups, and once to the inmates of the Edmonton Maximum Security Institution.
